How to Choose a Rug for a Bedroom

The bedroom rug serves a very specific set of functions — and understanding those functions makes choosing the right one considerably simpler. It is less about making a bold statement than about creating comfort, warmth, and a sense of calm. The bedroom is where you begin and end each day, and the rug is quite literally the first thing many people feel in the morning.

Softness and Pile Depth

In the bedroom, pile depth matters more than almost anywhere else. A deep-pile wool or lush viscose-blend rug underfoot as you get out of bed is a genuine comfort. Look for pile depths of 15mm or more for a truly luxurious bedroom feel.

Placement Options

The most common approach for a double or king-size bed is to run a large rug (ideally 200 x 300cm or larger) under the bed so that approximately 50–70cm extends on each side and at the foot. This grounds the bed beautifully and ensures you step onto the rug rather than the bare floor. An alternative is to use a runner on each side of the bed — a neater solution in smaller rooms or where the bed is placed against a wall.

Colour and Calm

The bedroom is generally not the place for a rug that demands attention. Soft, warm neutrals — stone, blush, warm white, warm grey — tend to work well, as do muted, tonal patterns. That said, a bedroom can absolutely carry pattern if the rest of the room is relatively simple: a Persian rug with a soft, aged palette or a flatweave with a simple geometric can both work beautifully.

Material Considerations

Wool is the gold standard for bedroom rugs — warm, soft, naturally resistant to dust mites, and long-lasting. Viscose and silk-effect rugs can look spectacular in bedrooms as their sheen catches the light beautifully, but they are more delicate and less forgiving of moisture. Natural fibres like jute and sisal are better avoided in the bedroom — they are harder underfoot and less comfortable for bare feet.

Children’s and Guest Bedrooms

For children’s bedrooms, practicality takes precedence. A flat-woven rug in a polypropylene blend or washable wool will stand up to the demands of a child’s room. For guest bedrooms — rooms that get infrequent use — you can afford to prioritise beauty over durability: a silk-effect rug or a finer hand-knotted piece will be perfectly at home.
