Choosing within the range
At the smaller end, rugs of around 240–250 cm suit most living rooms with a three-seater sofa and dining tables for four. Around 290–300 cm suits larger living rooms, corner sofas and tables seating six, and gives a king-size bed generous margins on either side. How to check before you buy
Mark the rug's outline on the floor with masking tape or newspaper and live with it for a day. In a living room, the front legs of every sofa and chair should be on the rug. Under a dining table, a pulled-out chair should still have all four legs on it. Leave 30–45 cm of bare floor to the walls.
Weight and handling
Large wool rugs are substantial. They arrive rolled and are best unrolled in place, with any creases relaxing within a few days. Use a non-slip underlay on hard floors to keep the rug flat and protect the floor beneath.
