Warm or cool neutrals
Not all neutrals are the same. Beige, sand, camel and oatmeal have warm yellow or red undertones and sit beautifully with oak floors, brass, terracotta and green. Ivory and cream are lighter and brighter, and work in both warm and cool schemes. If your walls lean grey, a stone or taupe neutral bridges the two; see also our grey and silver rugs.
Texture does the work
With a neutral rug, texture is what stops a room feeling flat. Look for high-low pile, looped wool, jute and sisal weaves, or a sheen of viscose catching the light. Natural fibres like jute bring an organic, relaxed feel; wool and viscose blends read more polished.
Living with a light rug
Lighter rugs are more forgiving than people fear — especially textured or mottled ones, which hide everyday marks well. In busy family rooms and hallways, a washable neutral rug offers the look without the worry. Deal with spills promptly by blotting, never rubbing.
