Wool is the gold standard for most living rooms — durable, naturally stain-resistant, soft underfoot, and in a good-quality piece, it only improves with age. Viscose and wool-viscose blends add a beautiful sheen and exceptional softness, catching light in a way that wool alone cannot. Polypropylene is a practical choice if you have young children or dogs — modern manufacturing has produced polypropylene rugs that are difficult to distinguish from wool by sight.

Step Three: Consider the Style of the Room

For neutral, contemporary rooms, a rug with subtle pattern adds depth without disrupting the calm. Traditional interiors are the natural home of Oriental and Persian-style rugs — pieces with complex patterns, rich colours, and deep pile. In eclectic or maximalist rooms, a plain textured rug provides a grounding note.

Step Four: Pile Height and Texture

High pile is luxurious underfoot but requires more maintenance. Medium pile is the most versatile option — soft enough to feel luxurious, practical enough for everyday use. Low pile and flatweave rugs are easiest to maintain, work well over underfloor heating, and suit contemporary interiors.
