How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room

Choosing the right rug size is one of the most important decisions when decorating a room — yet it's one of the most commonly overlooked. A rug that's too small can make a space feel disconnected, while one that's too large can overwhelm it.

The Living Room

In a living room, aim for a rug that fits all four sofa legs on it, or at least the front two. As a general rule, leave 30–45cm of bare floor between the rug's edge and the walls. A 200 x 290cm or 240 x 340cm rug works well in most living rooms.

The Dining Room

Your rug needs to be large enough that chairs remain on it even when pulled out. Add at least 60cm to each side of your table. For a 6-seater table, a 200 x 290cm rug is typically the minimum.

The Bedroom

A rug placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending at least 60cm on each side, creates a luxurious feel underfoot when you get up in the morning. A 160 x 230cm rug works well under a king-size bed.
