Indoor vs Outdoor Rugs: What's the Difference?
As outdoor living spaces become an extension of the home, the demand for outdoor rugs has surged. But not all rugs are made equal — and using the wrong one outside (or inside) can lead to disappointment. Here's what sets indoor and outdoor rugs apart.
Materials
Outdoor rugs are typically made from synthetic fibres like polypropylene, polyester, or nylon — materials engineered to resist moisture, UV fading, and mildew. Indoor rugs, on the other hand, are often made from natural fibres like wool, cotton, jute, or silk, which give them their softness and richness but make them unsuitable for wet conditions.
Construction
Outdoor rugs tend to have a flat or low pile, which drains quickly and is easy to clean with a hose. Indoor rugs can have a deep, luxurious pile that would trap moisture and take days to dry outdoors.
Can You Use an Outdoor Rug Inside?
Yes — and many people do. A polypropylene rug in a hallway, kitchen, or utility room can be a practical, easy-to-clean choice. Some of our outdoor styles are so handsome they look equally at home inside.
