Placing a rug under the bed
The classic arrangement is a rug laid sideways under the lower two-thirds of the bed, stopping just short of the bedside tables, so there is soft floor on both sides as you step out. For a double or king bed, a 230 x 160 cm rug laid widthways gives roughly 40 cm either side; a 290 x 200 cm rug gives a more generous 60–70 cm and suits larger rooms.
Other layouts
If you'd rather not move the bed, a pair of runners down either side does the same job for less. A single rug at the foot of the bed works well in smaller rooms, or where a bench or ottoman sits there. A round rug can soften a room full of straight lines — beds, wardrobes, windows.
Pile and fibre
Bedrooms see little foot traffic, so this is the place for the softer, more luxurious constructions: higher pile, viscose sheen, hand-tufted wool. Light colours stay cleaner here than they would in a hallway or living room.
