Getting the size right
The most common mistake is buying too small. As a rule, the front legs of the sofa and every armchair should sit on the rug, with the rug running 15–20 cm beyond each end of the sofa. For most three-seaters that means 230 x 160 cm at the very least; in an open-plan room, or with a corner sofa, 290 x 200 cm or larger usually looks far better judged. Leave around 30–45 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls so it reads as a rug, not fitted carpet.
Pile, fibre and family life
Wool is the natural choice for a living room — resilient, warm underfoot and slow to show dirt. Wool and viscose blends add sheen but prefer lighter traffic. For homes with young children or pets, a machine-washable rug or a durable flatweave takes spills in its stride.
Colour
If the sofa is plain, a patterned or colourful rug gives the room its character. If the furniture is already busy, a textured neutral from our beige and cream or grey ranges pulls it together.
