Do I Need a Rug Pad? (Yes — Here’s Why)

When people buy a new rug, a rug pad is rarely the first thing on their list. But it probably should be. A good pad does more than stop your rug slipping — it protects your floor, extends the life of your rug, and makes it feel significantly better underfoot.

What Does a Rug Pad Actually Do?

A rug pad sits between your rug and the floor. Its main functions are:

  • Grip — prevents the rug from sliding, buckling, or creeping across the floor
  • Cushioning — adds softness underfoot and reduces fatigue in standing areas
  • Protection — creates a buffer between the rug’s backing and the floor, preventing abrasion that wears out both surfaces over time
  • Airflow — allows air to circulate under the rug, reducing moisture build-up and the risk of mould or mildew

Do All Rugs Need a Pad?

Any rug on a hard floor (wood, tile, laminate, stone) should have a pad. On carpet, a thin non-slip pad keeps the rug from shifting without adding unnecessary bulk.

Lighter, flatter rugs on hard floors are particularly prone to sliding and can be a trip hazard without a pad. Heavier rugs still benefit from the floor protection and cushioning a pad provides.

Choosing the Right Pad

  • Felt pads — excellent cushioning, good for heavyweight rugs on hard floors
  • Rubber or PVC pads — superior grip, thinner profile, ideal for lighter rugs or rugs on tile
  • Felt and rubber combination — the best of both worlds for most situations

The pad should be cut 2–3cm smaller than the rug on all sides so it’s invisible when the rug is laid.

What to Avoid

Avoid cheap PVC pads on hardwood floors — over time they can leave residue, discolour the finish, or chemically bond with the surface. Look for pads labelled ‘safe for hardwood’ or made from natural rubber.

The Bottom Line

A rug pad typically costs a fraction of the rug itself, yet it can double the rug’s lifespan by reducing the abrasion that breaks down fibres from below. It’s one of the easiest wins in home furnishing.
