How to Stop a Rug Slipping on Hard Floors

A rug that moves every time you walk across it is frustrating at best and dangerous at worst. The good news is it’s an easy problem to fix. Here’s what actually works.

Use a Rug Pad

The most effective and long-lasting solution is a non-slip rug pad placed underneath the rug. Rubber and felt-rubber combination pads grip both the floor and the rug backing, keeping everything locked in place without any adhesives or damage to your floors.

A pad sized 2–3cm smaller than the rug on all sides will be invisible once the rug is laid, and it has the added benefit of cushioning and floor protection.

Non-Slip Rug Tape

Double-sided rug tape creates a strong bond between the rug and the floor. It’s a good option for smaller rugs or for securing the edges and corners of larger ones. Use a tape specifically designed for floors — regular double-sided tape can leave residue or damage finishes.

Be aware that tape is less ideal on waxed, oiled, or delicate floor finishes where adhesive residue could cause damage.

Velcro Strips

Hook-and-loop (Velcro) strips are another option, particularly good for rugs on carpet. One side attaches to the rug backing, the other to the carpet below. The grip is strong but the strips can be removed and repositioned.

Silicone Caulk Dots

A lesser-known trick: apply small dots of clear silicone caulk to the underside of the rug in a grid pattern and let it cure. The dried silicone acts as rubber feet that grip the floor without any adhesive on the floor itself. It’s removable, cheap, and very effective.

Choosing a Rug with a Non-Slip Backing

Some rugs come with a built-in rubber or latex backing that provides grip on its own. This is common in flatweave and utility rugs. If slipping is a concern, it’s worth checking whether a rug has this feature when buying.

On Carpet

Rugs on carpet tend to ‘creep’ rather than slide sharply. A thin mesh-style rug gripper designed for carpet—carpet prevents this effectively without adding height that could cause a trip hazard at the rug’s edge.
