Understanding Rug Pile Height: Low, Medium, and High

When shopping for a rug, pile height is one of the most important specifications to understand — yet it’s often overlooked in favour of colour and pattern. The height of the pile affects comfort, durability, ease of cleaning, and how a rug works in a given space.

What Is Pile Height?

Pile height refers to the length of the fibres (or loops) that make up the surface of the rug, measured in millimetres from the backing to the tip of the pile. Rugs are broadly categorised as low pile (under 12mm), medium pile (12–25mm), or high pile (over 25mm).

Low Pile Rugs (Under 12mm)

Low pile rugs have short, dense fibres that lie flat and firm. They’re easy to vacuum, resistant to matting and crushing, and practical in high-traffic areas. Furniture legs sit more evenly on a low pile rug, which also makes them a better choice under dining tables.

Best for: Hallways, dining rooms, kitchens, home offices, households with pets. Also a good choice if someone in the home uses a wheelchair or walker.

Medium Pile Rugs (12–25mm)

Medium pile rugs offer a balance between practicality and comfort. They feel soft underfoot without being so plush that they mat easily or make furniture placement difficult. This is the most versatile category and suits the widest range of rooms.

Best for: Living rooms and bedrooms where you want comfort without sacrificing practicality.

High Pile Rugs (Over 25mm)

High pile rugs — including shaggy and fluffy styles — are the most luxurious underfoot. They create a cosy, tactile feel and work well as a focal point in a room. The trade-off is that they require more maintenance: they’re harder to vacuum thoroughly, more prone to matting in traffic lanes, and can be difficult to clean after spills.

Best for: Bedrooms, reading corners, and sitting areas with lower foot traffic. Less suitable for homes with dogs or young children.

Flatweave Rugs

Worth a separate mention: flatweave rugs have essentially no pile at all. The pattern is woven directly into the structure of the rug. They’re extremely durable, reversible, easy to clean, and often lighter than pile rugs. They’re also typically thinner, which can be a consideration if you want the rug to feel substantial underfoot.
