Unikko in Burgundy is the quietest way to own Marimekko's famous poppy. The big, rounded flowers are worked tone on tone in deep wine and aubergine, so the pattern shows up through texture and the shift between cut and loop pile rather than through contrast.
Maija Isola painted Unikko in 1964, after Marimekko's founder Armi Ratia had banned flower patterns — Isola's answer was a whole collection of graphic, pop-art florals, and Unikko has been printed continuously ever since. This version is tufted in the Netherlands from New Zealand wool.
