This is the Unikko most people picture: big orange-red poppies with cream-and-black centres on an ivory ground. It is bold, joyful and instantly recognisable.
Maija Isola painted Unikko in 1964, after Marimekko's founder Armi Ratia had banned flower patterns — Isola's answer was a whole collection of graphic, pop-art florals, and Unikko has been printed continuously ever since. The design celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2024.
