Strawberry Thief is the design William Morris is best known for — thrushes stealing fruit from the kitchen garden at Kelmscott Manor, registered in 1883 and never out of production since. The birds face each other in mirrored pairs beneath arching foliage, with the strawberries picked out between them.
The Forest colourway is the deepest green reading, which suits the design: it was originally printed by indigo discharge, a method Morris spent years perfecting, and the dark ground is closer to that original than the paler versions.
