Orla Kiely Rugs: Stems, Spots and Mid-Century Pattern Underfoot
Few designers have a signature as instantly recognisable as Orla Kiely's Stem: a simple column of leaves on a slender stalk, repeated in neat rows. It has appeared on everything from handbags to kitchenware, and it translates naturally to the floor. The Orla Kiely rug collection, produced by Brink & Campman, takes the Stem and its relatives (spots, ovals, sunflowers and sixties blooms) and works them into rugs with the same cheerful, mid-century spirit. Orla Kiely describes her approach as drawing, refining and simplifying organic elements into perfect motifs, then repeating them to build rhythmic patterns, and you can see that discipline in every design. The Stem, four ways
The Stem appears across the collection at very different scales and strengths, so there is a version for almost any room.
- Multi Stem is the classic: columns of stems with every leaf filled in colour. Classic Multi Stem uses olive, orange, pink, yellow, grey and teal on a cream ground, while Kingfisher keeps to teal, navy, blue-grey and olive.
- Linear Stem draws the stems as a single ivory outline, in columns over an olive or slate-grey ground. Slate is the most neutral version and easy to pair with colour elsewhere.
- Giant Linear Stem blows the motif up so one tall stem fills the whole rug. Giant Linear Stem in Walnut sets it on a deep walnut brown for a strong graphic focus; Grey is the calmer alternative.
- Solid Stem carves the pattern into the pile rather than drawing it in colour. Solid Stem in Fern is worked tone on tone using cut and loop pile, so the stems appear as the light moves across the rug. Ecru is the palest version.
Spots, ovals and flowers
- Spot Square sets large dark spots inside a checkerboard of squares, with cut and loop pile giving each square a slightly different surface. Choose graphic Blue/Navy or the softer Walnut/Lichen.
- Optical Oval lines up rows of ovals graded in size so the pattern seems to ripple. Orange/Sand is the warmest colourway; Green/Cream is fresher.
- Sixties Stem scatters yellow flowers with chocolate-brown centres on slender stems across an ecru ground: Orla Kiely at her most cheerful.
- Flower Placement works at poster scale. In Pumpkin/Ecru a single giant pumpkin-orange flower sits at the top of the rug, with the rest left calm, so it reads like a piece of art on the floor.
- Shaped rugs include Sunflower, cut out as a flower of concentric petals in Yellow or Pink, and Flower Spot, a four-petal ecru flower with a black centre.
Indoors and out
The core collection is hand-tufted in pure new wool. Alongside it sits an Orla Kiely indoor/outdoor range, tufted from yarn spun from recycled PET bottles, which the product data describes as weather resistant, colourfast and easy to clean. It includes Giant Linear Stem, Solid Stem and Giant Sixties Stem in colourways from Persimmon and Paprika to Noir, and the little Stem Sprig in black and ecru, which is just as at home in a busy hallway as on a terrace. How to style an Orla Kiely rug
Let the rug lead. The multicolour designs carry a whole palette. Pull one or two colours out for cushions, a throw or a painted door, and keep the rest of the room simple.
Lean into mid-century. Teak and walnut furniture, tapered legs, globe lights and simple shapes all suit the collection's 1960s and 70s roots.
Go tonal in calmer rooms. If you love the Stem but prefer a quiet scheme, Solid Stem or Linear Stem in Slate gives you the pattern without the colour.
Have fun in children's rooms. The shaped Sunflower and Flower Spot rugs are playful at the foot of a bed or in a reading corner. Our guide to nursery and children's room rugs covers the practical side.

A decorator's note
Scale is everything with Orla Kiely. The same Stem can feel busy and joyful in columns, or bold and almost architectural at giant scale, so think about how much of the rug will be visible once the furniture is in. If you would like help choosing between the designs, send our team a photograph of your room and we will happily advise on the pattern and colourway that will suit it.
